TOMATO'S ARE BECOMING MORE RED

India :- 2nd largest producer of tomatoes in the world.

So what happened this year?

From the past couple days we are listening to various news regarding Tomato prices are increasing. So let's have a look at why it is happening?

We probably heard that Gold and money were stolen from the house or market but Tomatoes are stolen from the farm🫢. Yes you heard it right in Karnataka women farmer alleged that Tomatoes worth Rs.2.5 lakh were stolen from her agricultural land, according to Indian express report.

This only happens due to the sudden hike in the price of tomatoes. Why are only this year prices being hiked ? 

There are several reasons:- 

1) Biparjoy cyclone

2) Pest attack 

3) Delayed monsoon

4) Extreme heat

5) Inadequate Production 

There’s unseasonal rainfall in May. This damaged produce in places like Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Secondly, there are some viruses that have wreaked havoc. Especially on tomato plants in Karnataka and Maharashtra. For instance, the lead curl disease has struck the farms in Kolar in Karnataka. And the local Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) which received nearly. So yes supply has been stuck and eventually we know the basic economics when there is less supply and high demand prices will go high.

So how time it will to reduce the prices ?

The Indian government has launched "Tomato Grand Challenge Hackathon" to invite innovative ideas at various levels of the tomato value chain to ensure availability of tomato to the consumers at affordable prices and help tomato farmers get value for the produce.

So it's all about seasonal change in the producing states . In 2020 we also saw that farmers are throwing tomatoes on road due to excess supply and less price per kg so it's all about the environmental cycle .
